Distribution and habitat

U. - M. Orinoco (Venezuela)
Between Puerto Inirida and San Fernando de Atabapo on the Orinoco,
Río Cinaraco drainage (Venezuela),
Río Manapiare in the Río Ventuari system (Venezuela),
in Río Bita (caño el Mosco) and the Río Guaviare in Colombia.

We found this species further south, in a Venezuelan tributary to the Río Negro:

The habitat is pure blackwater:

Water parameters

PH : 4 - 5
ppm : As low as possible

My Experience

Although I have collected them in pure blackwater, they seem to be sensitive for some kind of blackwater, humic substances, or tannins, in aquarium.
Water I have peatfiltered (and made blackwater of) the same day, they like. If I let the peatfiltering go on for another day, a waterchange with this water kills them! Strange...

I tried to keep them in acid clearwater; they lived there, but never bred. In my blackwater they breed easily.

They live peacefully in small groups (6-10 specimens) in my tanks.

Breeding

Breeds easily when the water parameters are right, even within a small group.
